  1. Wireless cards and USB adapters will only give you access to the internet if there is a nearby access point (that is unsecured or you know the password to), such as a wireless router.

To be able to get access to the internet almost anywhere you would have to have a wireless internet access card that is supplied by a cell phone company with wireless internet service.

  2. Having a wireless adapter simply means your computer can pickup any wireless signal that is in the air strong enough for your computer to detect.

HOWEVER, most wireless networks are PASSWORD protected to keep "freeloaders" from using their network.

You can think of it something like being able to pickup TV channels in the air, but you need a password to see the channels........

  3. No and no.

I'm assuming you don't have an internal wireless adapter and that's why you want a usb one.

It comes with software.  You'll need to install the software so your computer can communicate with the adapter.

And what this does is allow you to connect to a wireless network.  You need the router to create your network, unless you're using someone else's.
