Use compensation to add 48 + 35.?

I'm trying to help my son with his homework and don't understand what using compensation to add means

this doesn't happen to be a word problem talking about salary + base = total compensation, is it?

By using a pencil and paper I get 83.

Is this some new, new math. I am getting old!

i thin it means like subtract 2 from 35 add it to 48 so u have 50+33 which is a lot easier to do because it equals 83 obviously
