  1. Routines are a very important part of a child’s day. They give children the security to benefit from the experiences of the day. Routines will vary according to the setting, but will usually revolve around a snack, meal or sleep.

    - Give the child security

    - Help meet children’s physical needs, e.g. eating, drinking, hygiene, health, sleeping, resting, exercise, etc.

    - Allow the child to have opportunities to socialise and communicate with other children/adults

    - Allow the child to practice self-care skills, e.g. hand-washing

    - Develop independence

    - Allow the child to develop an understanding of social skills, e.g. saying please and thank you

    - Give the child a chance to observe others and learn from them, e.g. table manners

    - Promote learning, e.g. language, memory

    - Develop senses, e.g. smell, touch, hearing, taste, sight.
