Question:

Use my number 1 waiver claim on Kevin Curtis?

I just drafted my team yesterday and the team that drafted Kevin Curtis has already dropped him. I know he has a sports hernia and is likely out til some time in October, but he is a very solid fantasy receiver when healthy. I already have solid receivers with Andre Johnson, Marques Colston, and Jerricho Cotchery with Javon Walker coming off the bench. However, if think if I had Curtis it would only make my team deeper and maybe provide some trade bait for later in the year. Would it be worth using my number one waiver priority to get Curtis, or will I regret not saving it?

Any opinions would be helpful. Thanks!

P.S. I play in a 10 team head-to-head league.

  1. It will depend on how many players you can keep on your bench. If you can keep a really really deep bench (10+) then maybe consider it. The news is still not good on Curtis and sports hernia is a very hard injury to heal from, especially as a WR where you are required to use your core or twist and turn a lot. If DeSean Jackson is still out there, you may want to consider picking him up instead. He will most likely be in a starting role with the regular offense now and his value is increased with his return skills.

So, in a 10 team league (depending on how many roster spots) I think there will be too many other players out there that have an immediate upside versus trying to get somebody like curtis. If you are willing to wait that long than maybe also consider Chris Henry, he has a 4 game suspension but injuries have been hitting Chad and TJ so he may be very valuable in an offense that will have to throw a lot.

  2. Definitely pick him up.  He'll be good trade bait along with Walker.  I would drop Ted Ginn because Sidney Rice is going to do pretty well with the long ball from his now big armed QB.  He's so fast there will be a lot of bombs that he catches for big yardage.

  3. I would not use your waiver priority already.  Most people don't check their teams until right before week 1 so you can probably pick up Curtis after he clears waivers.  Plus, he's not going to be a huge draw for most people based on his injury (though I still agree you should stash him on your bench).  Save your priority for when some starter goes down or some rookie breaks out and you actually need it.

  4. defineatly get Curtis, but i would drop Walker if no roster space, he is not gonna do good man.

  5. Considering Curtis is injured and will miss most if not all of September, you might want to wait on him. He has a sports hernia.
