  1. The latest version of Skype has great voice quality.

It is great as a long distance calling service and as a 2nd phone line, but I wouldn't recommend it as your only home phone service.  Skype does not provide 911 service, which is a concern for many people.  I have used skype for over 3 years now and like it.  But, don't rely on it if you need 911 access.

  2. To each his own I guess. Same thing with most services. Some work for you, some don't. So what I do is to get the service with lesser complaints and try it myself, if it does work for me then I stick with it. Unfortunately Skype doesn't work to my liking, not consistent quality and not so cheap rates for a voip. I now use Onesuite.com for all my long distance calls because they got prepaid phone card and voip services at the same time.

You can try it and see for our self, if it doesn't work for you then you can always ask for a refund and because its a pay as you go service you are safe not being tied up with any plans.

  3. I don't use my Skype - i know it's "cool" but that's mostly because it's cheap.  I have had Vonage for 4 years and loved them.  Now I use a different company - it's cheaper and pretty "cool" too... just ahead of the curve ;-)  I listed the site here below in case you were interested. I have no issues with clarity and the connectivity is great too.
