Use the 360 or PS3 as audiophile CD player?

Do these games consoles give good sound quality for just playing CD's?

I would buy one of these instead of a more expensive dedicated audiophile quality CD player (eg. Onkyo etc) and get high quality speakers if it was good quality.

Considering ALL THEY DO is just translate the CD audio to Optical output, they certainly will do that just as well as translating CD audio to RCA stereo output signal.....

The REAL investment should be in your speakers first and your amp second....of course mixing CHEAP with expensive is no good no matter how you slice it.....

i wouldnt exactly call them audiophile! :-) but they are not bad.

slightly off topic but these days i'm constantly amused when folks buy expensive speakers and amps, then plug in an ipod and play 128kb/s mp3s though it :-)  

for cd's it should be fine but i'd go with the onkyo etc. if you care about your music.
