How is it possible that a dishwasher can use less electricity and that you shouldnt wash the dishes in the sink.

Why do I think that a dishwasher uses more electricity?

  1. Well, a dishwasher is going to use more electricity than manual washing (unless you are a robot!)... However, using the dishwasher is going to use less water/detergent especially if it's a full load...

I LOVE using the dishwasher.. I only use it when it's full and on time delay so that it's using HOT water when we don't need it at 3-4am!  I also don't use major appliances at the same time... I used to run the washer/dryer/dishwasher etc.. all at the same time and when I got my electric bill it was HIGH around $114.00-  Now I kinda plan my day and use either the washer/dryer and set the dish washer on time delay at night... It's keep our electric bill around $80 per month.  Which isn't too bad....

I DO wash pots/pans in the sink once/twice a day.....

    Good luck

  2. I do it both ways, I am guessing that it uses less electricity because it can do a lot more dishes and not have the hot water running. That is to say for those of us who leave the hot water running while doing a huge load.

I use my sink every single day. I use the dishwasher maybe on the weekends or once during the week, sometimes its a great save and worth every penny!

Like your answer Jagee! kinda like what I was trying to say only better...

  3. I'm with you...  I would think that a dishwasher would use way more electricity!  The only electricity that you would use by washing dishes by hand is if you have an electric water pump, like if you have a well.  But even then, I think that would be less electricity than a dishwasher!

  4. Well you could be thinking think that a dishwasher uses more electricity?

or a  few reasons :--->>"the spinning motor uses more electricity than ,

if you kept a radio -on for the entire  time of a "typical wash

    cycle" &( measured current usage)

(I-prefer washing in the sink -less hot water, faster ,easier)

  5. Because you can hear it? When you wash dishes in the sink, and use hot water, you are using energy. And most people let the water run continuously while doing the dishes. This uses more energy than a dishwasher. Even if you have a gas water heater, there needs to be some electricity to switch it on. It it wastes water that way, so uses up more energy resourses.

Of couse it depends on how many dishes you are washing at a time. A dishwasher is more energy effecient when it's full, than if you do them by hand. But, washing a couple of dishes in the sink is better then using the dishwasher.

But, you should at least run your dishwasher once a week - dishes or no - to keep your dishwasher in good working order and energy efficient. Weird as that sounds
