Question:

Used Olympic caliber semi-automatic 22 rifle for $1500?

I'm thinking of buying a competition 22 rifle with all the "trimmings" owned by a former navy seal who pretty much built the rifle himself.

He wants $1500 for it as he is building another for himself. I'm planning on competing against other former navy seals and marines who are my friends.

I'm a novice, my friends are "experts".

Do you think it's a good buy?

I shot it a bunch of times and it's very accurate at 100 yards.

  1. Olympic caliber doesn't really say anything anymore than "trimmings" does, and as you say your friends are experts you are not

What may look like Olympic grade could just be an assemblage of pieces parts that shoots well

The price tag may also be what he has in the gun, which is not always what the gun is worth

I am always leery of what "former seals" tell me

I spent my whole life around the military and have found that there are more claimed former seals than former cooks

And cooks were all mess sergeants

  2. If you can shoot well with I say buy it if it is truly a olympic grade rifle.

$1500 might be the best bargain you ever get.

  3. If you want an Olympic target rifle then get what Olympians use..... Anschutz Rifles......

$1500 a good buy? Theres no way any of us could know unless its right here in front of us..... If your a novice then stick with the above rifles. They are unquestionable in reputation, superior accuracy, excellent rifles.....

  4. I too have to agree with Ohgerr.  I think that you can spend that $1500 on a good base rifle with all of the modifications that you would like, or you may also find a gunsmith who is interested in your project and may build the rifle to your body and any other customization that you may want for a comparable price.  I think it is in your best interest to research this a little more with some qualified gunsmiths and see what other options you have.  Good luck

  5. Ohgerr is completely right, call and talk to an expert

  6. Your friend may be giving you a "good deal". But he is selling you a rifle he has customised to his body and style of shooting. Not that i'm saying you can't continue to customize the rifle to you. But...he is selling the rifle for some reason.

If you are going to invest that kind of money, you may want to buy a new rifle for your initial platform and work with that.

Champion Shooter Supply is in near where I live...nice folks...give them a call. They know a "ton" about these grade rifles. They could advise you better....and they know what they are talking abut.
