Used Vonage or Voip? Would you recommend?

I live in BC, Canada and want to sign up for a VOIP (voice over internet protocol). I figure my 2 options are Vonage and Shaw Digital Phone. If anyone has any thoughts, feedback, warnings, recommendations etc, it would be greatly appreciated!

  1. I am a Vonage (close to 2 years) and MagicJack User (close to 1 Month).

Vonage isn't too bad their customer service is great (so far no problems) and I recently got 2 months free for telling them I am trying another VOiP service (I didn't tell them it was the MagicJack) so they try to keep customers but at a price I suppose on THEIR end.

Not hard to install, just plug into your modem and plug your computer in their modem they send you and plug in your phone into the jack labeled "line" or "phone"

Call VONAGE toll free at 1-VONAGE-HELP (1-866-243-4357)

    Lastly

MagicJack = $40 + shipping for their product then $20 per year thereafter YES per year

(not much of a number selection)

    Vonage = $20 - $42 per month (one or 2 lines)

(WIDE number selection because they lease numbers from phone companies)

Search for MagicJack discussions in Yahoo Answers. :-)

I have answered quite a few.

I had the MagicJack for 5 days and couldn't get to work and i had 14 tech support conversations. After the 14th one, I went to the other computer (which was logged in under our son's account) I plugged the MagicJack in and POOF it worked!!! So from there I figured out that in order to use the MagicJack you have to have a "LIMITED" user account on a computer. I was trying to install this item on "ADMINISTRATOR" user accounts. To prove that I wasn't crazy I created a NEW account and called it "MagicJackUser" and made it a "LIMITED" account and before you know it it WOKED!!!

Here is my 15th and final customer service conversation.

    Hope this helps..

    Thanks

  2. We use Vonage to check our voice mail on the plane or where ever and it's very secure. We have been with them for about 51/2 years. Not one problem.Good Luck

  3. I have the Shaw Digital phone and the service is pretty good. Have had one problem in the last year.  Best thing about Shaw is their customer service. It is the best!

I would go for the Lite package rather than the full package.

If you have high speed Internet and want cheap long distance I would consider the magicJack.

I have owned one for three months and have used it extensively to call within US/Canada and also to the UK (0.2 cents a minute to UK).

It plugs into your USB port and only works while the computer is on. Only works with XP and Vista. You can use the Internet while using the phone but any heavy duty downloads/uploads will have an effect on the voice quality.

Works great about 95% of the times as there are still a few wrinkles to be ironed out but all in all not a bad product, especially for the price ($39.95 + shipping which includes first year of local calling and unlimitted callling in US and Canada). No extra changes. Another year is $19.95 per year.

    Trust this helps.
