Hi,

I'm looking to buy a 1987 Sierra boat this weekend. 17.5 ft., 2.5 liter, clean and in good condition. Has a cd player and trailer for 1600 dollars. Sounds like a great deal, I'm concerned with the age as it's almost 22 years old, and I know zip about boats or working on them. If anyone has info they'd care to share, I'd appreciate it. Is Sierra a decent boat or am I possibly opening a can of worms? Thanks for any insight.............

  1. I dont know of this boat but anyway if I where you, its going to save you a bundle of money if take someone with you who does know about boats, even if you have to pay for there advise, dont walk into it blind you could end up with a  worthless pice of junk.

    Good Luck

  2. Make any purchase contingent on a test drive.  Put it in the water and run it for at least an hour, 15 min at speed (full speed).  Good luck!!!

  3. even at $1600. have a mechanic inspect and sea trail> Or the cost to repair it can exceed the price of the boat very quickly>

  4. A boat of this age can be a great way to get into boating.

Some things you need to ask and do:

1: Ask if they will give you an in water demo, this will show you that all is working okay and any small problems that there may be.

2: Ask about the motor, Has it had any major work, regular maintenance performed each year, who did the work on the motor.

3: Check the prop and lower unit for damage.

4: Check the deck for soft spots - look around the hull for cracks or breaks in the fiberglass - look for any damage

5: Check trailer - look at wheels and ask about wheel bearings - regularly greased - ever been changed - check lights to be sure they work.

Remember you are buying a USED boat and be prepared to do some work to keep it going and or spend a some more money on it.

Good Luck and safe Boating ! !
