Question:

Used car bought at a tow place?

I'm gonna buy a used car but the guy told

me that the car was bought at a tow place.

He said the previous owner didn't claim

the car back. I'm not familiar with this kinda

stuff. I like the car and everything but I wanna

know if it's a scam or sth...What if the previous

owner hit someone or got a lotta tickets?

Do I need any document/certification from

the guy selling this car? What kinda extra

process do I need to go through at DMV?

Any other legal proccess?

Thanks!!

  1. A car without Plates or registration sounds fishy to me. Ask of the Title of the car, Is it in the name of the person selling it ? If not you don't buy. Even if the prior owner had tons or tickets, you are not responsible for it. Provided you have a Bill of Sale on the car.

Another thing, write down the VIN number of the car and the title photocopy. Take that to the DMV. Ask them if this car is clear or not. It is possible that the car was marked Not-Operated or such by the prior Owner. If the DMV gives you a green signal then you can buy it provided you get a Bill of Sales from the Seller & have that notarized. Also put a condition that you will not pay until the title is transferred & your Registration is issued.

The fact that there's no registration worries me. I have a feeling the title isn't in the name of the guy selling it. So he is going to refuse to show the title. In which case you walk away.
