Question:

Used fence posts?

Has anyone ever re-used fence posts? The concrete is still attached to them. Can I just dig a hole deep enough and set them in? Will this work? Or do I have to remove the old concrete first and re-pour new concrete? (I sure hope not)

  1. I have seen that done, but you might find that a rented jackhammer will split off that old concrete in a flash. Rent the small one since handling a large jackhammer can be a lot of hard work.

Most home stores sell bags of product for setting posts. you just mix it right in the hold and drop the post in.

  2. sure if they are not moldy just plant them and add mud.

  3. Just dig the hole to accommodate the concrete and plant the posts.  If you tamp the soil around the concrete you will be just fine.  Mud is a term for concrete.

  4. If you have to use the old posts, just hit the concrete with a sledgehammer. It will break off.

  5. Just reuse it with the concrete attached . Once you have dug a big enough hole plumb up the post to the right height, fill the hole about half way with some soil and compact it down well. Fill it in and compact it. no need to put new concrete in.

  6. You can use the old ones but they don't hold as well. A good hit with a sledgehammer will take the cement off.

  7. It would be more secure to remove as much of the old concrete as possible, otherwise you have a very large hole to dig. You also will need more concrete and the bond is not as good.
