  1. In many states it is illegal to resell mattresses, especially from a mattress store.  They should know better.  Unless this mattress came from a trusted friend or relative I would skip it.  Bugs or body fluids are not something you want to be sleeping with, are they?

  2. If you can afford a new mattress I would say that's probably the best bet.  Bedbugs and and questionable fluids would be a major concern, but I know that times are hard and a reconditioned mattress is much better than no mattress.

Research the vendor.  Ask about how exactly the mattresses are reconditioned.  Do they simply recover the mattress?  Do they do any sort of sanitation to the insides?  If they seem reputable I'd go for it and buy a good mattress cover that zips up around it.  ...and spray it down with Lysol although that's unlikely to do anything other than alleviate my paranoia!

  3. If you want to reuse a mattress I would spray it well with Lysol and then make sure to use a good mattress cover over top of it. People do reuse them but its probably healthier to buy a new one.
