i have my license more than 6 months, and my parents are planing to buy me an used car...

we're deciding between honda and toyota (depise the model for now)... we know both of them are really reliable, however, we heard used toyota works better than used honda, is that true? but people said honda has a better engine...

so any advice/information/experience is welcomed!

  1. They are close enough to where it doesn't really matter in average reliability. I'd go with Honda over Toyota since their cars actually have a soul. To disagree with the guy above Honda doesn't make the "best engines around." Even in Japanese brands Nissan's VQ engines easily trumps anything Honda has made.

  2. In my opinion, Honda builds the best engines around, but Hondas and Toyotas are both great cars.  Hondas tend to be more sporty and performance oriented too, which may lead to higher insurance rates for a teen driver, but it's going to be high no matter what you drive so the difference may not be worth mentioning.

As far as which is better, it's a case by case decision as every individual car is different.  Your luck with a used car is more dependent on how well it was maintained and cared for than it is on who built it.

  3. I was just reading something like over 60% of cars on the road with over 500,000 miles on them are Toyotas. Toyotas do work better. With a Toyotas parts are generally cheaper and they actually support their old vehicles unlike Honda. Try getting parts from a Honda dealer for a 20 year old Honda. They no longer make them. Honda tends to stop supporting their older cars after 15 years. Toyotas generally support theirs 20 plus years. If it's not in stock, at least you can order it. Hondas are generally good for about 250,000 miles- some 300,000. Rarely 400,000 miles.

To Hondas credit, they are the technology leaders and it shows. Their cars are fun to drive and theirs always something new coming out for their cars. Unfortunately, that makes the other stuff obsolete fast- hence the lack of support. They are also the only car company to stay true to their racing program. However, theystill don't make a real truck. The Ridgeline is based on the Honda Accord/Honda Odyssey. Far from being a bad vehicle, but not a true truck either.

Toyotas aren't as attractive but they last longer because Toyota sticks with what's proven. Still both are great cars and will suit your needs reliably and economically.
