Question:

Useful crafts for 7 year old?

My daughter is 7 and loves crafts. She has done lots of the store bought kits; beads, bracelets, painting, etc. While she does like these, we end up a bunch of useless things, or too many (like beaded jewelry) to possibly give away (all friends and family already have thier fair share). she is still too young for some of the more advanced crafts, like sewing, but what else is there that isn't too messy, complicated, that she can do on her own w/out endin up w/an unlimited "supply" of useless c**p? Something that can be worked on, a little at a time, over a long period of time? Like a continuous project?

  1. Get her some of the craft sets that you might think are aimed more towards boys, like the wood construction sets.  It's all cut for you, all you have to do is put it together.  She could make a bird house, a treasure chest (good for holding bead jewelry), a gumball machine (a metal/plastic kit), etc.

Do they still make rug hook kits?  She might like that, and they're pretty easy.

Once I got my neice a greeting card making kit - that's pretty useful.

    How about Legos?

  2. She isn't too young for sewing... I was only 9 when I got my first sewing kit. Get her a basic kit and some doll clothes to sew, or teach her to knit if you don't want her around needles.

You could also buy one of those large build it yourself doll houses and work on it with her. It would be a continuous, 3-6 month project, but in the end she'll have a beautiful collectable doll house.

  3. knitting teach her to knit

  4. I used to love crafts and still do. Here is a list of things I was nuts for as a girl.

Hook rugs. They come in a box available at walmart or crafting stores and you make a predetermined pattern with wool and a hook.

Knitting: All my barbies and dolls had scarves. It was all I knew how to knit.

    Floss bracelets

Corking. Available in kits for kids

    Weaving.

Friendship pins: safety pins with beads

Scrapbooking - My newest passion. Shes not too young to start. This will also make great gifts that will be cherished

Cross stitch -  Buy the plastic cross stitch sheets and floss and she can cut out pieces to make doll furniture, jewelery boxes for all her beading, pencil holders, kleenex boxes

Quilting - she can make patch work pillows shams to start. She is definitely old enough to sew by hand. My five year old loves this,

    Paint by numbers

    Etching

    Ceramics

    I could go on forever

Go to your local craft store and let her explore new things. Encourage your daughter to have such a positive hobby.

If you find your daughter creates too much stuff, encourage her to donate her work to your local children's hospital. Think of all the kids there that would love to receive beaded jewelery!

  5. Sewing is such a fun hobby...call your local JoAnns or sewing machine sales and ask about sewing classes....Or call your local community college for crafting classes like pottery, or crochet, or knitting.....Or call your local scrapbooking store to find out about classes alot of our local stores offer weekly classes...not only will she be able to do her crafts but be able to meet others who enjoy her hobbies too...

Another option would be to check with local churches to see if they offer a crafting club ( Im going to go tonight, Im going to learn to make greeting cards...lol  Im going to sign the back with my 9yr olds name....lol)

  6. She could start sewing with help...What about making a quilt with her? She could also start to knit - you can get special needles for children I believe.
