When I use in and when I use at before a place name?

From my grammatical knowledge I know that when 'in' is used before big place such as big town big country name. On the other hand 'at' is used before small town, village name.

For eample : _

I live in India.

I live at village.

We can not write as : _

I live at India.

I live in village.

Is My knowledge is correct.

  1. No.  In and at have nothing to do with size.

You don't live at village.  You live in a village or in the village.

At is almost never correct with live.  It is more properly used with an adverb, like you are away at college.

Of course British usage differs, so there may be variance on this if you are learning the Queen's English.

  2. in for both of them.  A lot of people say at when they should say in.  The grammatically correct way to say those sentences is: I live in India.  I live in a village

  3. You would use "at" when you are talking about a specific place:

I live at 123 Happy Street.

I live at the end of the street.

She is standing at the top of the stairs.

  4. IN implies a container or boundary. I live IN the city of Silverdale which is located IN the county of Kitsap IN the state of Washington. AT implies a location. I catch the ferry to Seattle AT the ferry terminal IN the city of Bremerton. I buy my ferry ticket IN the terminal or I could say I buy my ticket AT the terminal, either way works. My house is located AT an altitude of 700 feet above sea level. My house is located IN a forested area. There is no rule which covers exactly when each word is used. However, with the example phrases above, AT points to a location and IN points to being on one side of a boundary.

  5. Use "in" for both because even a village is a big place compared to you.

An example for "at" is ""We can meet at the coffee shop" or I wlll see you at the movies" (maybe because it is too dark inside:) )

You could meet in the coffee shop or outside it. You would meet "in" a village "at" the cake shop there. You live "in" a house. Basically, if you can get inside it, use "in" if you meet outside it, use "at"

Elsie is incorrect.  You should say "Is my knowledge of grammar correct?" You can say "Is my knowledge correct" leave out the second "is".

Your grammar and use of language is very good.

You can speak grammar to a slang user and they will understand you, you cannot speak slang to a person who only knows grammar, they will not understand

  6. ROFLMAO! Are you kidding? Is My knowledge is correct: actually supposed to be My knowledge of grammar, is it correct? and it is correct. I don't really care about grammar, unless your talking to an adult who speaks good english. I can speak two languages! although the 2nd one really isn't a language, English and Slang.

  7. Not necessarily,  I live in America and I live in Marshfield.  Both are correct.

My town has only 5000 people in it; so, it would be similar to a village.

    Good luck.

  8. Well.....

I think we would always use the word "in" regardless of the size of the town, city, etc.  If it is the name of the town or city or whatever, we would say I live "in" - for example in New York State or in Queens or in Central (that's a little town near me with about 25 people in it).

If we use the word "at" it would be to be more specific - perhaps in an address - for example I live "at" 123 Park Place "in" New York.  We might also say I am "at" home but we would say I live "in" a house.  But since you asked about the name of a place, I'd say you would almost always use the word "in."  The only exception I can think of is a college student who lives on campus might say I live "at" UCLA.  UCLA is a name (well, an abbreviation for the name of the school) and we wouldn't say I live "in" UCLA.

I hope this helps a little.
