  1. port holes are for light and ventilation. These were important in the days before powered vents and air conditioning or electric lights. now a days they are mainly decorative.


  2. On a ship, any window below the main deck must be watertight. A round shape will press evenly against a sealing gasket. This will minimize any weak spots where water can intrude.
