It's a way of getting the best options based on results.

Suppose medicine X would result in side effects with 10% of the people using it. Medicine Y, used to solve the same problem, would have people suffering from side effects in 2% of the cases. Which one would you like to get prescribed if you were the patient and the side effects were as severe for both medicines ?

The doctor should know which one's safest and he'll need statistical data to know which one is safest.

This is just... an example, statistics can be used almost everywhere.
