Question:

Using 5.1 home theater speakers with 7.1 A/V Receiver?

I am thinking about buying a 7.1-channel A/V receiver, specifically Sony STR-DG820, because my current 5.1-channel A/V receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs. However, I don't feel like buying new speakers as well. Will my current 5-speaker set work with the 7.1-channel A/V receiver? (Do I need to do anything special?) My feeling is that I can, i.e. just use 5 out of the 7 leave the extra 2 unused, but what do I know?

(I know that Sony also have 5.1-channel A/V receivers with HDMI, but the number of HDMI inputs is too few on those models.)

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Thank you for your advice.
