Question:

Using Projector to watch TV on Wall?

I'm interested in using a projector to watch TV on a wall or screen. What kind of projector is needed? Can any projector be used, like an old one thats 10-20 years old? What is the picture quality difference between using the wall versus a screen? Please keep the answers simple as I don't know all the lingo for this kind of stuff. Thanks!

  1. If your projector is that old the room will need to be very dark

    to see the Image.

Newer projectors are brighter and can support HDTV

A screen helps to reflect the image better but you can paint the wall with a special screen paint to do the same thing.

  2. You pretty much answered half of your question yourself.  The technology we had 10-20 years ago doesn't compare to what we have now.  Depending on the components of the old projector...  You would just have to try it out.  You obviously will see a picture, just don't expect it to be something you would want to brag about.

If you don't want to buy a screen they do make a cheaper paint specially for projecting onto a wall.  The screens are designed make your pic look its best, so you get what you get sort of speak.  You need the reflective properties of a screen or the paint to get your best contrast for the pic.  The darker the viewing area the better, especially for older model projectors.

There are obviously different manufacturers with cheaper prices but here is one of the paint on screen sites.

You know what you have better than I do, try  it out if you already have the projector, if it looks like c**p... upgrade.

  3. Old projectors have poor motion picture qualities. just simply because of the technology back then.  A really high gloss wall reflects back and makes the room brighter.  A textured wall like stucco would just show up to annoyingly . Cloth Like a bed sheet will do better than a wall ( white cloth is better )  You can buy a decent Projector for under 1000 bucks.

  4. Using and old projector...

You might have a problem getting an old projector that is bright enough, or one that has a working lamp in it. The color might look funny, and it might not have the right kind of inputs for your cable box, or DVD player. Other than that a 10 year old projector would do fine inside with the lights off.

    Wall vs. a Screen...

A wall will work fine if it is a flat and clean surface. A sheet will work fine if it is clean and you can keep the sheet nice and tight on your wall. Either one is fine if you aren't very picky about how your image looks.
