Question:

Using Prozac or other drug to wean off Effexor--is this a good idea?

I've been taking Effexor for OCD and depression for about four years. My highest dosage was 225mg daily. I've been so fortunate to step back down to 150mg about two months ago with no serious withdrawals. I've heard about using Prozac as an intervention will help to minimize the serious risks when weaning off Effexor. Yes, I've read all the crazy sh*t that happens when weaning off the drug, including the brain zaps. I think Effexor is the legal form of heroin cause of the terrifying effects of stopping it. I've been trying to come off Effexor for a long time; I'm so nervous about getting the brain zaps, and I don't want to find out what they feel like either. So I wonder if I can take Prozac while weaning off the Effexor safely. Then once I take my last dose of Effexor, I can come off the Prozac with very little side effects and be completely drug free and happy. Can this be possible? I'm gonna talk to my doctor about this next time I see her. What's anyone else's input on this?

  1. sometimes the best way to wean off any of the SSRI's is to do it 10% at a time per week and see how you feel.  Adding another medication may complicate the process of getting off Effexor.  However, this discussion should be reserved for your physician as they know you best.

  2. all i know is that 15 days have to go by after quiting one medication to start another.i took prozac and it was good for me but made me very hyper among other side effects like hallucinations , fever, memory blackouts . My psychiatrist said i needed something milder. you can ask your dr what she thinks i can only speak of my experience
