Using Wifi for Bluetooth like applications?

Can I use Wifi without a service provider? Like If I want to take advantage of its range and use it like bluetooth?

I'm thinking of buying wifi tranceivers for devices i want to interact with each other.(ie two laptops).

Of course you can build a local network based upon WiFi without a service provider...

However, without an ISP, you will not have Internet access, just communication between your own devices!
