Question:

Using Your Own Vehicle for your Job: Compensation for Mileage?

by  |  earlier

My job this summer is to work with a young man with special needs. It is going well, but the school seems reticent to let me use their vehicle to do it. It could be 30 miles a day or more, some days quite a lot more. I see the cost of this as more than gasoline; there is wear on the vehicle, and mine is not new.

What is a ballpark figure for reimbursement for mileage in a situation like this?

Thanks for any help.

  1. Right now until the first of the year the IRS will reimburse the company that you work up to 48.5 cents a mile, anything above and beyond that the business has to eat.

  2. my old job reimbursed .25 cents per mile. but i think thats too low.

  3. it depends on company policy.  i would ask them.  it may be part of the job (if you're getting paid a lot) to use your own equipment. when you applied, did they ask you if you had a car?  if so, i would imagine it's your responsibility.  you never know though.  but i do know, at least in most situations, you get some back in taxes if you use your own vehicle and your own gas for your employment.

good luck - try talking with whoever your manager or boss is about the situation.

  4. Definitely ask.  Our company's policy is 51 cents per mile.

  5. My company offers 48.5 cents per mile.  A few months ago it was enough to provide a little extra for wear and tear, but who knows now with the insane gas prices.
