Question:

Using a splitter to increase length of my satellite cable?

I miscalculated and my cable is short by 2 feet for hooking up my satellite. I have an extra 2 feet from before and a splitter lying around. Can I just use the splitter as a source to connect both pieces of cable so I get the proper length or would it effect my picture quality. I don't feel like buying another 20 ft cable.

  1. There is a given amount of power.  Using a splitter... well... splits that power, even if it's not being used.  A 2:1 splitter sends 50% to one output and 50% to the other output, even if you're only using one of the outputs.  A 4:1 splitter sens 25% to each output.  There is also a minute loss of power from the connectors, themselves, but so small that it's not worth considering unless you had a few of them.

So your better concept would be to simply buy a coupling connector, probably around $1 - $2, if that much.  That way, you only have the minute losses of the connection, same as the splitter connections, without the major division of power being transferred.

When connecting the coupler, make sure the connection is tight.  You don't need 50 ft-lbs or torque, but you do want it tight enough that water from the rain doesn't seep in through the threads and degrade the connection.

  2. Get yourself an F-81 connector & don't use a splitter. What this connector is , is a female fitting that allows you to s***w 2 pieces of coax together. If possible, try & put this splice inside the house & not outside, like the previous answer said, you don't want moisture getting into any splices outside.
