Using an ancestry test, can I find out my maternal grandfather's ancestry?

Well, I'm Persian and my maternal grandfather's family is unique in having blond hair and blue eyes and we're interested in seeing if they're from outside Iran. I've heard women don't get their father's ancestral DNA, but, being a male, would I get it? Guessing not since my mother wouldn't have it.

  1. If you have a male cousin who is a paternal grandson of this grandfather, or a maternal uncle, this could work. There could be numerous possibilities if you do your homework.

  2. See the link to SMGF. They plan to use autosomal in the future

Your maternal grandfather would not be in your mitchondrial line and if you are male, he wouldn't be in your Y line.

You share your autosomal DNA from your maternal grandfather and right now they are not using autosomal for ancestry testing as it is more complicated to do so.  They will use autosomal to give you vague origins, like Northern European, East Asian etc but nothing more specific.

A female is related to her father by her autosomal DNA only.

Most of your DNA is autosomal. You get it 50-50 from both parents.   Barring any duplicates if you get back to your 6xgreat grandparents, you are direct descended from 510 individuals.  Of those 510 you have mitochondrial DNA from 8 and if you are male, you have Y DNA from 8 but you have autosomal from all 510.  However, in the long run Y & mitochondrial are a very minute part of your DNA.

Y & mitochondrial are used in ancestry testing as it goes down specific direct lines.
