I don't wish to know what current records are only what the max possible speed of a serve could be.

  1. the equipment isn't going to fail. the fastest serves are 154mph (roddick) and 129mph (venus williams).

  2. This question is too broad to be answered! I'll try to cover as much as i can. Your asking how,  based on tennis-equipment technology, how fast can a ball be physically struck i am guessing. This is simply unaswerable because, so much relies on both physical and techinque capablities. You can not get any quantitative data from that and therefore you can not define such a limit. In addition, a serve's speed can be calculated in many ways. Do you mean speed as in by the time it reaches the returner or at the contact point of when hte server hits the ball?

With current technology, speed of a serve is currently measured based on the contact point of when the server hits the ball. Currently Andy Roddick has the fastest recorded serve clocked at 155 mph (249.4 km/h). However the tools that record the serves are only available at certain tournaments and Roddick has stated that he has surpassed this speed many times before. Youu can really say that technology, at the moment, limits the speed at that general area, but remember that human capability is limitless and  any limit can be surpassed .
