Using downloaded subtitles to a dvd?

I have downloaded spanish subtitles to use with a dvd that does not have spanish subtitiles. How do I use the subtitles? I know how to use it if it's an AVI files however when I play the dvd how to I get it to read the downloaded subtitles and not the original ones on the dvd?
