B. How can you tell them apart?

2.)Throughout history a lot of time and effort has gone into the development of the idea about the atom.We still can't see them so has all this effort been a waste of time? Please explain your answer.

3. A. The periodic table can be used to explain how some elements behave. For example gold, silver, and copper may be found uncombined in nature. From their positions on the periodic table would you expect this similarity? Explain Please.

  1. 1.a. Elements consist of only one kind of atom, they are pure substances. eg. Na (Sodium).

Compounds are two or more elements combined in either a molecule or lattice. eg, NaCl (Sodium Chloride).

Mixtures are a combination of elements and compounds. They can be heterogeneous (not uniform in composition, ie, rock or dirt) or homogeneous (pure substances with uniform composition eg, coffee).

  2. Element - contains only 1 kind of atom

Compounds - More than one kind of atom bonded together.

Mixture - compounds and elements mingling together but not bonded, can be easily seperated.

    2) No, Rutherford came up with his model of the atom and supported it with an experiment, further experiments have been done to confirm and update this, and it is accepted that this is the model of the atom, as there is so much evidence for it.

    3) No, they are all in the same group, meaning they have closley related properties, meaning they should behave the same way and be found in the same places.

    Hope that helps.

  3. 1. Element: composed of only one atom.

                      - gold, silver, oxygen, (one atom substances)

    2. Compound: composed of one or more elements.

                      - glucose, table salt, water(2atoms of hydrogen,1atom of oxygen) etc...

    3. Mixtures: composed of compound.

                      - pasta, salad, milk, etc...
