Question:

Using fresh flowers on a wedding cake?

I am having a very casual wedding reception tomorrow (we eloped back in January and promised the kids we'd do the cake thing this summer) anyway, I would like to decorate the cake with fresh flowers, Roses to be exact but I've been reading on some sites that you have to worry about sticking the roses directly on the cake because of possible pesticides etc and to wrap them or put them into something before.. and then on other sites people say to just stick them in the cake as long as the flowers aren't posioneous.

Does anyone know? and what are and where do you get the inserts that you put the flower in to go into the cake??

Would they have them a hobby lobby?

  1. Where are you getting the flowers from? If they're from your garden, you know whether you have used pesticides or not. If you're getting them from the florist, tell them they're for a cake; many florists do cake decorations as part of their wedding prices and use specially pesticide-free flowers for that.

  2. Why not use nasturtiums or something like that which is edible anyway?  there are many flowers you can safely eat.

Not a huge fan of Wikipedia, but here's a link to a list of them:

  3. We had fresh flowers on our cake. Our florist wrapped the stems with some kind of tape so it could be safely inserted in the top of the cake. It worked brilliantly, and in my opinion they do look a lot better.

  4. yeah you could do it!!!! here in philippines some cake artisans have already tried using fresh flowers for the reason of having a special ambience and atmosphere for a wedding or even a birthday!!!!!

  5. They put fresh roses into our wedding cake.  I know that she used some of that green foam but I didn't see if she stuck that roses into it and then sat it on the cake or if she just stuck the roses directly into the cake.

You can get the foam at any craft store.  They got ours from the floral shop at Kroger(Grocery) store where they ordered the flowers from.

I have pictures on my myspace, take a look.

  6. I'd ask a florist because they can advise as to which roses are poisonous and provide you with roses with no pesticides or something.

  7. get some floral tape....walmart or hobby lobby either one would have it.  cut the stems off to about 2 inches, wrap the stems with the tape.....(it kinda stretches around it....its really easy to figure out!) make sure you get the cut end covered, and insert into the cake.....keeps water from seeping out of the rose so that 1---your roses will be fresher longer and 2--your cake won't be all stem soggy and nasty.  The tape is really cheap, like 2 dollars for 3 rolls at wal-mart.  you can even tape them ahead of time and keep them in the fridge overnight and then stick them in the cake when its ready tomorrow.  Good luck!

  8. I think getting some sort of holder could end up being very expensive if you are getting one for each rose.

You can ask the florist you get the roses from for further details (if they're poisonous, proper way to put them into the cake, etc.), just let them know you're using them for your cake.  If you're really concerned, wrapping the stems in florist's tape (available at craft stores) should suffice.

    Congratulations!

  9. I would think Michaels would carry the inserts for the flowers.  As far as the pesticides go, I wouldn't concern yourself with that.  I would recommend gently running the flowers until some water and patting them dry (very gently!) or sticking them back in a vase until they dry.

People are such alarmists - they want you to worry about everything.  Yes, pesticides are real and true that some people are more sensitive than others, but they are not eating the flower - the flower is simply resting against the icing.  Decorating with fresh flowers sounds like a marvelous idea and I encourage you to go ahead with it.   Congrats on your upcoming marriage!
