Question:

Using hot glue on electronic components...

...I've heard is not a good idea. I want to beef up some cheapo IDE cables that I bought. They are the round type as opposed to the flat ribbon type. The rubber boot is poorly made and leaves a bit of (insulated) wire exposed. I think that the connectors will fall apart with use. Hot glue looks like it would do the job that I want. However, I've done some research and learned that hot glue can conduct milli or micro Amps/Volts. Can anyone recommend an alternative, maybe silicone gel, AND where to buy it at?

  1. hot glue is perfect!! or you can try epoxy resin, but this is very hard to remove if you ever wanted to take it off again.

most manufactures use hot glue on circuit boards.

(sorry wires, but hot glue is hot glue. any glue stick and gun will do, i've modified many consoles with it)

  2. I'd recommend tape before hot glue.  While manufacturers use glue to hold components in place, it's not the hot glue you can buy at the hardware store.
