there are two pieces of pipe forming an L-joint for a section of piping that connects a water source to a shower head. Pipe 1 is 6'4" and Pipe 2 is 8'1".

  1. 12in. = 1 ft.

    6ft. 4in.

Divide the inches by 12 to get

    6 4/12 ft

Reducing the 4 / 12 to lowest terms gives the mixed fraction:

    6 1/3 ft.

Putting the whole number over the denominator 3 gives the improper fraction:

    (6 * 3 + 1) / 3

    = 19 / 3 ft.

    Similarly:

    8ft. 1in.

    = 8 1/12 ft (mixed fraction)

    = (8 * 12 + 1) / 12

    = 97 / 12 ft (improper fraction).
