Question:

Using ipod hard drive in laptop?

I've read somewhere on the internet that the interface for an ipod hard drive is ATA. If a laptop uses ATA drives, is it possible to use an adapter to connect an ipod hard drive to a laptop? I would think that it would be more logical if mp3 hard drive manufacturer make mp3 hard drives to last longer, and computer manufacturer incorporates those mini hard drives into their laptops. The iPod hard drives are much smaller than a standard laptop hard drive, and it stores almost as much.

  1. yes all hard drives are ata. there are 2 types of hard drives, pata and sata. pata is the older format. there i no point in using an ipod hard drive in a laptop. its smaller, and is to small for the port where the laptop hard drive goes. new thin laptops are starting to use smaller sold state drives.

  2. The iPod style hard drives are already being used in laptops, a Dell D430 Latitude for example uses one already so I guess manufacturers have beaten you to that idea already ;)

  3. There may be an adapter to use an iPod hard drive in a laptop. I know that iPod minis used microdrives, which are commonly used in embedded computers, and can be easily adapted to a laptop. The only problem is that smaller hard drives are more expensive to manufacture, and laptop hard drives are already small enough for normal laptop form factors. Otherwise laptops would have those kinds of hard drives.
