Question:

Using my home theatre for TV?

I know this question is on here a lot, but none of the answers have helped me. I have a 32" LCD flatscreen that supports HDMI. I also have a Magnavox DVD home theatre system. Why can't I get my TV audio to go through my surround sound speakers? When I play DVDs I use my HDMI cable from the DVD player to my TV. My cable is from my cable box using HD cables. Should I use the HDMI cable to hook up my cable box to my TV and the HD cables to hook up my surround sound to my TV? Sorry if I'm making this more confusing than it's supposed to be.

  1. The easiest way to do it is to run either a optical or coax cable from your source, the cable box, straight to your surround receiver. The only way digital surround will work is through one of these digital inputs or HDMI if your receiver is capable and your cable box is capable.

  2. You will connect your cable box via HDMI to the television. Almost all tv's with an HDMI connection have a "digital optical out." You will connect your TV's "digital optical out" to your Magnavox home theatre system. If your home theatre has a "digital optical in" port.

If your surround sound is also a dvd player then your audio doesn't need to connect your tv. You can use the component connection (red green blue) to connect the video of the dvd player to the tv.

If your tv has two HDMI in connections then I would hook them both up via HDMI and then run the optical out to the Magnavox surround sound.

  3. Your question is a little bit confusing because it is unclear what exactly is not working among the components of your home theatre system. It would be helpful to know what manufacturer and model your TV is so that I could look up what connections it has available and its capabilities.

Without know that, I'll still try and help:

First, wherever you have HDMI available, I would use it. It simplifies all of the connections and tends to run better quality video and audio (some A/V purists will disagree with that statement). So if you have HDMI inputs available, take advantage of them.

Second, the majority of newer HDTV's with hdmi inputs also serve as a receiver for the audio. So once you hook up all the components (DVD, cable, etc.), the only thing that you should need to run to your surround audio system should be from the audio output of the HDTV. In other words, everything connects to the TV, and the only thing that connects to the surround system is the TV.

I hope this was of some help.

  4. You need to connect either

    1) The Audio out of the Cable Box to the audio in of the receiver

    2) The Audio out (if present) on the TV to the audio in of the receiver

The audio out is usually stereo (Red/Yellow) RCA
