Using my nose to push buttons on the cashier screen?

ok, so i have been working at our local Publix Supermarket for about a year now. I am a high school student going into my Junior year. I originally started as a bagger, but got a promotion to cashier after 4 months of working. About 4 months following, i was in i a weird joking mood and started pushing buttons on the screen infront of the customers.

I only did it in front of like two of them. I was later called into the managers office (couple days later) and was read a letter that was written to the Coroprate center in complaint about me. i was made to feel stupid in front of the asst. cust. service manager, and required to fill out papers explaining myself. it was as if i killed someone.

I haven't been late once in my year of work, i always work harder than almost all of the other cashiers. i always smile and treat each customer really well. i give it 150%.

  1. Well, I work in a grocery store and have for 10 years. I think that yes, what you did was funny, but not professional. I do not think that you should mistreated because of it. The assistant manager was probably called in to the office during your reprimand because the store manager has to have a witness in case you were to make accusations against him/her.

I would recommend, if you haven't already, take a moment to speak with the store manager about the fact that you haven't been late once and that you try to work hard and give great customer service. Maybe even put it in writing. Also, apologize (whether you mean it or not) to your manager for any trouble the incident caused him. He/she was most likely told he had to reprimand you, which means he was in the hot spot for your joke. Life is short......and now you have a cute story to tell.

  2. your manager is upset because he's responsible for the actions of his employees, so essentially, he got yelled at for something you did, that would make anyone angry. If he got too many letters from Corporate, he would get fired.

That is probably why you are getting the third degree.

If you like your job and like your manager, I think it would be in your best interest to talk to him/her and let them know you didn't realize it would turn into such a big deal.

It isn't butt kissing to try keep your work environment a good place to work in...for both you and your manager.

  3. I work as a cashier and using your nose to press buttons is very unprofessional, as well as not sanitary.  I know it doesn't seem fair that you have worked their for 4 months and then this occurs but imagine that you were a customer and you saw something like this happen, would you want to continue shopping there?
