  1. set your 5.1 to the optical inputs aux is the composite cable and will not work foe optical

  2. Go into the menu on the PS3, audio settings, and change the output from Aux to optical. and your set. Do this with the PS3 controller. You do have to connect the optical cable  from the PS3 to the Home theatre. Also make sure you set the home theatre to optical input.

It's kind of a pain if you use both. I change the PS3 to HDMI for gaming, and have to change it to optical for my BLue-Ray movies. I don't like having to turn on my surround every time I play a game.

Recap: 1. Connect optical cable from PS3 direct to the home theatre system. 2. Set the home theatre to optical input not aux.. 3. Go into the PS3 menu/audio settings and change it to optical out. Then you should hear optical digital audio through the home theatre.
