Using pine cones for crafts?

Question

During a camping trip, I picked up some pine cones to use for Christmas crafts. Is there anything I need to do to them to prepare for being painted or to prevent them from getting all "buggy?"

you can try soaking them in water and then drying them under the sun. it might take a while to get all the bugs and pine pitch off, but when you dry them, they'll be lookin good!
