Question:

Using public transportation while disabled?

I am in a full leg cast and use crutches. I used the Rapid Transit (somewhat similar to a subway) to go to downtown Cleveland recently. A man graciously offered me a seat but I declined - not wanting anyone to trip over my cast which would be in the aisle. I felt very badly for him as I explained my reason for not sitting, but he did not understand or chose not to. Is a woman, either disable or not compelled to accept such offers. I take my situation in stride, but incidents such as this make my curse my situation. Or, am I too sensitive?

  1. Next time say, "Thank you very much.  However, I'm afraid my leg will stick out too far and someone might trip or get hurt.  Thank you, again, though."  Smile and move to some place you can stand comfortably.

Or, if you carry a large bag you could put the bag on the seat and rest a crutch against it.  Thank the person and acknowledge that balancing with the bag on your shoulder/back is difficult and that they've made your commute that much more pleasant.

  2. It sounds as he was being gracious and which was nice but you didnt accept and explained why,so if he didnt understand or got offended it sounds like he was the one being too sensitive.

  3. no, ur perfectly fine it's just the man thought you didn't  appreciate what he were doing for u. don't let it get to your head

  4. No, you are not compelled to accept such offers.  Just say "I cannot sit for medical reasons" and leave it at that.
