Question:

Using sentence stem exercises?

I'm curious if anyone here is familiar with sentence stem exercises. They originated from Nathaniel Branden's popular self-help books, about self-esteem, responsibility, living consciously.

The idea is, he provides a beginning to a sentence -- "If I brought 5% more awareness to my financial situation--" and you complete it several times. You do several of these daily (he provides a scheduled program) and it's supposed to facilitate self-improvement.

I ask because I've been doing them for his book "The Art of Living Consciously" and it's having the opposite effect. I thought it would either work or not work, but I honestly feel and act LESS conscious after two weeks of doing them. I'm forgetting my wallet, walking right by people I know, really obvious things that indicate a lack of consciousness.

What's going on? Any ideas? I don't FEEL any more conscious either, if anything I feel discombobulated. I feel shallower..reading books or watching movies, I can't seem to catch subtexts and things I could a few weeks ago.

  1.  Probably all you're talking about means it is working! You are starting to realize new facts of yourself and as they fight their way into your conciousness your are loosing awareness in everyday life activities. I guess you need time to conciliate the new self knowledge you're acquiring through the exercises.
