Using the sun for directions?

Im not sure which way the sun sets and rises from. And how looking at it can tell you where north is and west is etc...

  1. The sun rises in the east and remains in the east until mid-day (at or around noon).  So in the morning, east is always in the direction of the sun, west is opposite the sun, north is to your left if you're facing the sun, and south is to your right.

    The sun sets in the west, so in the afternoon and evening, west is in the direction of the sun, east is opposite the sun, north is to your right if you're facing the sun, and south is to your left.


  2. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.

    An easy way to remember this is to think of time zones. The eastern seaboard of America will always be ahead of the western seaboard.

    Find the sun. If it's setting, it's in the west. From there, you just need simple knowledge of the cardinal directions.
