A wooden pallet will be used to ship items internationally by ship with the cost based upon every 100 square foot placed on the pallet. Since I want to maintain some cost control when loading the pallet, I need to know about how high I can stack items on the pallets size of 40"x48" to reach the 100 cubic foot level.

  1. you need the depth of the pallet because all you have is the length and width.....I will tell you how to determine this though  .....100 square the Root Means Squared of 100 square feet is 10 sq. ft. length by 10 width sq. ft. therefore the height of the ship's walls' will be the same........say for example that the pallets were 6 inches thick per pallet......that would be two stack of 20 pallets......because 10 feet in inches is 120 inches.....10 feet multiplied by 12 inches per foot=120 inches divided by 6 inches thick per pallet =20 pallets per stack and there is two stacks........

  2. The height will be 100ft^3/(3.33 x 4)ft^2 = ~ 7.5 ft or 7 ft 6 in

    Note; this does not take into account the heighth of the pallet! If the space taken by the pallet is not counted, then this answer is OK . If the pallet height does count as part of your cargo volume, you will need to subtract the height of the pallet from 7 ft 6 in to get height you can pile the stuff. You might want to check the regulations so you don't get any unpleasant surprises

  3. You can go to a height of 7.5ft. (7'6") Including the pallet(s).

    40" x 48" = 3.333ft x 4 ft = 13.332ft².

    100ft³ / 13.332ft³ = 7.5ft height.

    (Check: 3.333ft x 4 ft x 7.5ft = 99.99ft³).

  4. twice you call it 100 square foot, once you call it 100 cubic feet.

    I'll go with the 100 cubic feet value, it seems to make more sense.

    changing to feet,

    100 = 4 x 3.33 x h

    h = 7.5 feet.
