Using walkie talkies to chat to my neighbour....?

My gf lives a few doors down from me on the same road. I think it's silly paying to ring her and so have been thinking about walkie talkies. How secure is the signal on these? Can anyone pick it up? Any idea where i can get a good pair from ? (I live in the UK). What specs will they need?
