  2. The Density of a liquid or solid divided by the density of water will give the Specific Gravity of the substance,

    Ethanol Density = 0.789g/mL. Water density = 1.0g/mL.

    S.G of Ethanol = 0.789g/mL ÷ 1.0g/mL = 0.789.

    The g/mL units cancel each other out leaving a unit-less figure which is the Specific Gravity.
