Using windows defender and spybot s&d need help please

Question

Is it possible to scan individual files that Ive downloaded for viruses using these products. I know s&d can search for malware and spyware by right clicking the file and selecting scan now but I cannot for the life of me work out how Im supposed to scan individual files for viruses. Is there a way you know about or is there an add on for defender. This seems like such a basic function that should be implemented into all anti-virus software because before I changed from my last anti-virus software (Microsoft One-Care(90 dat trial ran out)Doh!!) this was the thing I used the most.

Windows Defender and Spybot S & D are antispyare and antimalware, not antivirus software. You can with an antivirus software, if you need one for free I'd either recommend Avast or Avira.
