Question:

Using wine savers with s***w top bottles?

For years I've used Vacu Vin wine savers (before you ask, I like a glass or two at home some days and my husband prefers beer). But now much of the wine we buy has s***w tops. For many reasons I prefer them, as you're much less likely to get "corked" wine. However, the Vacu-vin don't work properly on them as the openings are slightly wider.

Are there any wine savers suitable for s***w tops? Thanks a mil.

  1. yep the perfect wine saver is the cap. On s***w tops, the wine is already aged and no corking was neccesary. The wine may last up to 7 days in the frig and capped.

  2. With the Vacu-vin, what you are trying to do is suck out as much air from the bottle as possible to minimize oxygen contact with the wine.  It is oxidation that makes your wine go off.

Another popular way of eliminating oxygen is to use one of the widely available spray cans of inert gas sold in wine stores.  The can comes with a thin adapter tube that goes down into the bottle down just above the level of liquid.  Spray a bit of the gas into the bottle.  The gas is heavier than room air and will displace oxygen away from the wine, thus preventing oxygenation.  It does not react with the wine and will not alter its aroma or flavour.

You can then put the original cap back on the bottle to prevent evaporation.

A popular brand is called "Private Preserve" and sells for about $15 a can.

    Cheers!
