Question:

Using wrong Shaft golf?

I have the cg red golf clubs but my parents surprised me and got them but they got me regular shafts while i would have gotten stiff. I get a good amount of swing speed. Hit my driver 270 average. What effects does using too weak of shafts create. ie distance, ball striking, accuracy or does it not make much of a difference at all. be specific.

  1. i had the same thing happen to me and it will cause you to slice the ball because your club face will open up and when you slice you loose distance

  2. If your drive flies 250 you can use the stiff shaft.

  3. My swing speed for the driver is typically in the 110-114 mph, which dictates a stiff to x. For kicks I have tried to hit drivers with regular and have found that I usually slice the c**p out of them due to the shaft being torqued to the point that the clubhead is way behing the shaft therefore leaving the face open at impact. Best case scenerio is a push. Swingspeeds of 95 and up should be in the stiff department.

  4. distance

  5. All of the above are good answers.  A suggestion.  Go to a golf shop with a computerized hitting range.  Try the clubs your parents bought you.  If you're ball flight/distance aren't to your satisfaction, return the gift for stiff shafts.  (Don't use the gift set because once they've been used, you won't get full falue on a return.)

  6. You will probably find the ball will go much higher with too much backspin for a driver.  With a shaft thats too weak, I usually hit it right although the 'textbook' would say it will go left.  Experiment.  Using a shaft thats too weak is better than one that is too stiff.  Many players think they need stiffer shafts than they actually require.

  7. You should use the "weakest" flex that you can control.

Also, look at how soft the tip of the shaft may be...

This is a fairly crucial spec to look for, depending on what you are looking for.

Torque is another key spec to look for, when you have higher swing speeds.

  8. I have a golf buddy that bought a Big Bertha driver just because he missed his old one. Thing is it was a different shaft. Every time he played with it, he had to compensate in some way and it threw off his entire game. Which means I beat him.

If you get the wrong shaft it will throw off your game and you will have to learn how to hit that club all over again. With the distance your talking about a stiff shaft would be a good thing. A regular shaft might have too much flex.

The only real way to tell is to have a pro examine your swing.
