Usps invalid address question?

Question

I had something shipped from China to new york using Usps, but the person wrote down the wrong address(the address didn't exist). And now I was wondering if the package would be sent back to china or held in a post office?

the postal service may have it and try to investigate if the address is close enough (I've gotten things with wrong house numbers written down, wrong zips and wrong streets - but addressed to me and they've made it somehow)  If they can't determine then it gets sent back. How long I guess depends on the local post office it was sent to
