  1. haha no they don't teach you flips. if you want to learn flips become a gymnist. in karate they teach the old school way. which involves doing forms and katas. but it is a very good foundation. from there you can go on to kickboxing or muay thai and stuff.

  2. Most traditional martial arts classes will have 5 main components as requirements to advance in belts:

1.) cardio/endurance (push ups, sit ups, cardio)

2.) Basic stances, kicks and punches (round kicks, side kicks, blocks, punches)

3.) forms, also known as kata or poomse

4.) sparring (simulated fighting with or without protective gear)

    5.) Self defense

There are other things, like foreign terminology, traditions, etc.

Flips and other fancy stuff won't come for a while, and will only come if you have the athletic ability to pull them off.

  3. a great school teaches you to respect others first

  4. The teaching focuses on the following main areas:

Kihon Waza:  Foundation Techniques, such as punching, kicking and blocks.

    Renkei Waza:  Combination Techniques.

Ippon, Ohyo and Kihon Kumite:  Pair work, putting the foundation techniques into practise.

Kata – ‘Form’:  Predetermined sequences of movements.

Ji Yu Kumite:  free fighting/ sparring, only started once you have learnt the necessary techniques and control.

If you want to learn 'fancy' techniques, maybe you should consider the new XMA:

  5. it depends on the style and school; more traditional okinawan schools will have a different focus that american hybrid styles

But probably on the first day you'll spend time learning stances, and basic punches, kicks and blocks

you might begina a basic kata, or simple self defense moves

when you say "flips" do you mean throws, or back flips?

you may eventually learn throws, but first, they generally want you to learn to take breakfalls first

if you mean backflips, you're probably better off taking gymnastics

if you're looking for a flashier "movie" style, you may want to look into tae kwon do

  6. You are given instruction in basic techniques, and then you drill them for about 20 to 30 repetitions each.

Then you are taught forms and you are made to drill them for roughly 5 to 10 repetitions each.

Then towards the end you do two person drills, various trips, throws, and joint locks.

At the end of the day, more basics, and maybe a Kata, but usually followed by the most recently learned Kata and then everyone is sent home.  If the instructors need to train new students they'll have you do bag work or something.

As to the cool flips, sorry, you'll have to learn Tae Kwan Do for that one, and even then its only after you earn your second grade in your black belt.

    good luck
