  1. i was held back for being to small when i was in k-garden I was as big as a 2y but I was just as smart as the other kids

  2. My oldest boy was so academically ready for Kindergarten at 5 it was just unbelievable, but socially he was way behind.  We waited and sent him at 6 and he is excelling academically but he is still socially a little behind.  Boys really do mature at a slower rate, I have two of them and they both waited to go to K until 6.  Social issues are a huge reason to hold them back a year.

  3. It can be either.

Depending on when the child's birthday falls in the academic school year, he or she can be just shy of a year younger than another child in the class and that can be a big difference both maturity wise, but also in intellectual development.

  4. that is actually usually the case. sometimes is a child is stated early they retain them just so that the ages if the children match up a little better.

  5. Most of the time, it's for social or maturity issues. My cousin Jim was kept back in kindergarten because he was not good with sharing (he was an only kid) and had a hard time transitioning from being the only kid to being in a room with 20 other kids. He stayed back a year and moved up normally after that, and he just graduated from a full ride to Loyola University in Chicago--he's doing med school next.

  6. It depends. It can easily be both. Did you not have a conference to speak to the teacher about this? With my kids, I remember end of the year conferences where the teacher talked about my child's progress for the year, their reading and academic levels, their social and communicative skills, and how prepared they were to advance to 1st grade. If you didn't have that, I suggest getting ahold of the teacher and finding out the specifics.

  7. Actually, the reasons are probably equally weighted in terms of stats.
