The Salt Lake City franchise is close to filling up the void left behind by Scott Layden, who had 25 years of history with the organization ....
At the start of the off season, Utah Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin had the smallest coaching staff as per NBA standards and it got even smaller after Scott Layden’s departure to the San Antonio Spurs.
However, according to latest reports, the Salt Lake City franchise is close to reaching an agreement with a suitable person to join Corbin’s staff for the coming season. That was confirmed by general manager Dennis Lindsey.
"We’re getting close but we’re not going to announce anything prematurely,"
No names have come up till now, but there has been speculation that Jerry Sloan’s nephew, Brad Jones, who is currently the head coach of the Austin Toros – the San Antonio Spurs D-League affiliates - is the favourite to land the
spot.
However, Lindsey denied the rumours and remained adamant on not getting into details at the moment.
"I don’t have anything to tell you … other than we do have a concrete direction and we’re hopeful that one thing in particular will come through," Lindsey said, "We think we’re close, but we’ve got to button up a lot of details."
The Jazz management need to get through the final details at a rapid pace as they don’t have a lot of time before training camps begin and having a suitable assistant coach by then is crucial. They do face a tough task of replacing
Layden who now will work under one of NBA’s best coaches in form of Gregg Popovich.
Layden’s departure brought an end to a long 25 year old relationship he had with Jazz. He had been with the Utah a long time and was one of the main people involved in the recruitment of John Stockton and Karl Malone. He had also
served a great deal under the legendary coach Sloan. He is now ready to start a new beginning in Texas and the Jazz management will be hoping to the same as they move on into a new era with a relatively new coach and a promising young line up.
