Question:

Utilities included in rent?

I'm moving into a new apartment and heat and water are included in the rent. It doesn't say anything about power. Does this usually mean the tenant is responsible for setting up their own electricity? (I've always lived in apartments that include power in the rent).

  1. It sounds like you are.  Most places will not pay for electricity.  (Some won't even pay for heat... although personally I think A/C is more important).  Call up your landlord to find out if you have to pay, and then find out which utility in the area you have to call to set up your own electricity bill.  Get ready for the sticker shock.  If you are running that A/C in the summer in a one-bedroom home, be prepared for bills equaling about $150 if not more.

  2. why don't you call your landlord and ask?

I'd say the electricity is up to you, don't assume if it doesn't say it.

in Nebraska, the landlord will call for you and set it in your name automatically, and it is put in your name

  3. Read the contract. It should include all these details. If not or you didn't get it yet, get in touch with your landlord/lady or the agent who made the deal. Learn everything you need to know, every little detail, before you move in. Then you can make up your mind.

  4. Most rent does not include utilities unless it says that it is all inclusive.  A lease should include those details of what is included.  If you are not sure, clarify that detail with management prior to moving in.

  5. A lot of apartment complexes now have meters for each unit. I don't know where you are located, but in my neck of the woods, they started charging for electricity in almost all complexes about 20 years ago. I would be really surprised to find one today that included electricity in the rent.

  6. If the contract doesn't state electricity is included then you get a separate bill for that.. Yes it's strange.. that you have to pay extra.. you have the contract.. read again. if it doesnt say it includes electricity. then it doesn't.
